Bio

Ben Houghton is a Melbourne based composer and audio designer. Working with a combination of traditional instrumentation, sample-based sounds, field recordings, and electronic textures, Ben creates a unique palette for each project to enhance narrative and create emotional connection.
Ben specialises in adaptive audio systems for games and brings a wide range of creative and technical skills to game audio from years of producing and performing electronic music.

In 2024 Ben continues his residency at ACMI X while working on “Call of the Golden Valley” and “Letters to Arralla” amongst other freelance projects.

In 2023 Ben joined the ACMI X community as a part-time resident, working alongside other multimedia creatives. Ben joined the team at O'Saurus Studios to commence work on "Call of the Golden Valley" while continuing on "Letters to Arralla" (Little Pink Clouds) and "Site Unseen" (Alexander Muscat), as well as continuing to record and mix podcast "Backyard Stories" and work on several other projects. During Melbourne International Games Week Ben was a panellist at High Score and PAX, and joined the O'Saurus studios team to accept the inaugural "MIGW Award" at the AGDAs. In February Ben participated in the Global Game Jam, contributing music and audio to multiple game jam projects over 48 hours.
In 2022 Ben worked on several game projects including "Letters To Arralla" by Little Pink Clouds, "Site Unseen" by Alexander Muscat and "Miska" by Umbrella Party Studios. During Melbourne International Games Week in October Ben attended the High Score and GCAP conferences and "Letters To Arralla" was showcased at Parallels and PAX. Ben also participated in the Global Game Jam once again (check out "Indecisive Duck" here).
In 2021 Ben participated in the New Enterprise Initiative Scheme, gaining funding to start his freelance composition practice. Working in a new creative partnership with collaborator Edwin White, Ben co-composed music for the short film “Starlings Of The Hyperreal” (Harrison Leech) and helped with recording and post-production for the “Backyard Stories” podcast.
In 2020 Ben completed his Bachelor of Applied Music (Composition) at Box Hill Institute and was awarded “Best Music/Film Score” at Deakin University’s “Visionnaire 2020” film screening for his work on “Love The Life You Live” (Wei Shi). Ben also attended the Melbourne Global Game Jam, creating music & sound for 5 game teams in the space of one weekend. Other projects include composition for forthcoming comedy podcast “We’ll Try Anything Twice” and short films including “Love Locks” (Joshua Machuca) and “Zodiac” (Ava Hampson) . Ben also worked with artist Elisha, producing the single “Better Without You Now”.
In 2019 Ben won the Best Music Production award at the inaugural Creative Cup At Box Hill Institute for his production work on the track “Figures” by Point Blank. Other projects included VCA Masters theatre production “LuNa” (Kitan Petkovski) & several short film collaborations including “Home” (Alan Woodruff) and “An Inaccurate & Dramatic Re-enactment of The Great Emu War of 1932” (EM Leunig). Ben also attended the High Score & PAX conferences.
In 2018 Ben began music composition studies at Box Hill Institute, working on scoring multiple short films including “Pastel Stains” (Claudine Ocampo), which featured at Swinfest. Ben also contributed sound design and music for “The Children’s Hour” (Sarah Vickery), a VCA Masters theatre production.
